Pepsi and Coca-Cola banned in Tamil Nadu
A ban on cola drinks made by multinational beverage companies such as Pepsi co and coca cola came into effect in Tamil Nadu from 1 march 2017. The federation of Tamil Nadu traders associations (FINTA) and the Tamil Nadu association’s forum (TNTAF), the two largest associations in the state said that it has a support of over a million of retailers of the state. The main reason behind this boycott is to show its support towards Indian companies.
A FINTA spokesperson said that foreign made drinks are not good for health. The associations will promote Indian soft drinks & juices & their manufacturing. They would also urge more retailers to push sales of Indian drinks over foreign drinks. The cola companies did not make any comment on the situation. Whereas Indian beverages association defending coca cola & Pepsi said that both companies together provide direct employment to 2000 families in Tamil Nadu & more than 5000 families indirectly through their extensive supply chain.
The option should be given to consumers. Why only PepsiCo & coca cola must be banned no other brands of soft drinks even they are not good for health. Govt. is the only competent authority to decide what is safe or not the traders.
On the other side this boycott promotes make in India initiative. It would give benefits to MSME's and replace foreign brands. The trader’s association’s boycott on Pepsi & coca cola products in Tamil Nadu entered the fifth day but response continues to be mixed. The two multinationals continues to remains silent on the issue.
